Winter pollution has once again turned Delhi-NCR into a gas chamber. With AQI crossing dangerous levels, the Supreme Court has lost patience and allowed immediate strict measures.

On November 19, 2025, the Supreme Court pulled up authorities for delay in controlling air pollution and permitted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to impose GRAP-4 restrictions right away, even though GRAP-3 is currently in force.
The court said public health cannot wait for bureaucracy. Under GRAP-4, offices may shift to 50% attendance, work-from-home will be encouraged, construction activities will stop, and older vehicles may face tougher curbs. Delhi’s morning AQI touched 410 – “severe” category – because of stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and industrial smoke.
The bench criticised both Centre and state governments for poor planning and enforcement. Residents have been advised to stay indoors, wear masks, and keep children and elderly safe. Schools are already shifting classes online in many areas.
Environmentalists say long-term solutions like better public transport and crop residue management are still missing. Today’s order shows the judiciary is ready to step in when governments fail. People hope stricter rules will bring some relief soon.
