Why Cambridge Dictionary Chose ‘Parasocial’ as Word of the Year — and What It Means

The Cambridge Dictionary has named “parasocial” as its Word of the Year, highlighting how one-sided emotional bonds with celebrities, influencers and AI have become a defining feature of digital behaviour.

The Cambridge Dictionary has selected “parasocial” as its 2025 Word of the Year, marking the rise of a digital-era behaviour that has become increasingly common. The term refers to a one-sided emotional connection people form with public figures, influencers or even AI systems — individuals or entities that do not know them personally. Editors say the word reflects a major shift in how online audiences engage with those they follow.

Though the concept appears modern, “parasocial” was first introduced in 1956 by sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl, who observed how television viewers felt bonded with on-screen personalities. For decades the term remained limited to academic use, but the explosion of social media has pushed it firmly into the mainstream. Constant access to celebrity content, livestreams and personal updates has blurred the line between admiration and imagined closeness.

This year, the dictionary updated its definition to include AI, noting that many users now treat chatbots as companions or confidants. Cambridge says the growing emotional reliance on digital interactions — especially among younger users — contributed to the surge in searches for the word. The institution recorded multiple spikes in usage linked to high-profile celebrity announcements, influencer controversies and online fan reactions.

Editors describe the choice as a reflection of current culture, where emotional investment in people on screens often carries the intensity of real-life relationships. They note that parasocial behaviour has shaped fan communities across platforms, sometimes leading to excessive loyalty, conflict or unrealistic expectations.

Experts say parasocial bonds are not inherently negative, but they can become problematic when they replace real social connections or foster a distorted sense of familiarity. As digital platforms become more immersive, the word is expected to remain relevant in explaining the emotional dynamics of modern online life.
