Mauricio Taricco Suspended by K‑League for Racist Gesture

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors’ assistant coach Mauricio Taricco has been handed a five-match ban and fined 20 million won by the K‑League disciplinary committee after making what officials called a “slanted‑eye” gesture toward a referee during a recent match. The punishment has sparked strong reactions from fans and referees alike.

During a K‑League match on November 8, Taricco was sent off after vehemently protesting what he believed was a missed handball call. After being shown a red card, he shouted “racista” and then placed his index fingers at the corners of his eyes — a motion that league officials interpreted as a derogatory “slanted‑eye” gesture.

The K‑League disciplinary committee reviewed video evidence and ruled that the gesture “matched the form” of a racially derogatory act. They stated that the gesture “is universally regarded” as insulting to people of East Asian descent, and said that Taricco’s action inflicted “racial insult” regardless of his claimed intentions.

Taricco maintained that he meant no racial offence — he said he was simply asking if the referee had actually seen the play. According to him, he pointed to his eyes to suggest that the referee’s vision was at fault. But the committee rejected this explanation. They emphasized that the outward expression of the act, not his explanation, was worthy of judgement.

Beyond the suspension and fine, the case has reignited tension between referees and clubs in Korea: the referees’ association plans to escalate the matter, suggesting further action may be taken beyond the league. Meanwhile, some Jeonbuk fans and insiders argue the punishment unfairly frames Taricco’s protest as discriminatory.

This incident has raised hard questions about cultural interpretation, intent, and validation in professional football. It underlines the challenge of policing gestures in a global sport where a single motion can be read in vastly different ways — and sparks a broader conversation about respect, accountability, and racism on the field.
