The Real Reasons Behind the Thailand–Cambodia Fighting

Violence has erupted again along the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia, weeks after a ceasefire was brokered with the mediation of Donald J. Trump. The renewed clashes have displaced thousands, threatened regional stability, and highlighted how fragile the previous peace deal was. The involvement of a powerful external actor underscores the international dimension of this conflict.

Recent clashes between Thailand and Cambodia have shattered hopes for lasting peace. The fighting — involving artillery, airstrikes, and cross-border shelling — erupted after a landmine explosion injured Thai soldiers. Thailand accused Cambodian forces of laying new mines in violation of the ceasefire, while Cambodia denied the allegations, insisting that any mines were leftover from previous conflicts. Within hours, both sides engaged in heavy military action, targeting contested villages and culturally significant areas along the border.

The ceasefire signed in mid-2025 was brokered under intense diplomatic pressure from Donald Trump, who personally communicated with the leaders of both nations. Trump warned that continued violence could affect trade relations with the United States and facilitated negotiations that led to a temporary pause in hostilities. The agreement required withdrawal of heavy weapons, de-mining of contested zones, and troop reductions, with international observers expected to monitor compliance.

Despite these efforts, the peace deal failed to address the deeper issues. The border remains ambiguous due to colonial-era demarcations, disputed highlands, and culturally significant temple complexes claimed by both countries. Nationalist pressures and lack of trust between local military commanders further undermined the ceasefire. Analysts note that the deal was heavily dependent on external pressure rather than genuine mutual agreement, making it highly vulnerable.

When the landmine incident occurred, it quickly escalated tensions, causing both sides to suspend ceasefire commitments. Renewed fighting has forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes, disrupted trade and local economies, and put cultural heritage sites at risk. Border communities have been left vulnerable as schools, markets, and transport networks shut down amid ongoing hostilities.

Trump has indicated he may intervene again, seeking to use diplomatic pressure to restore calm. However, both Thailand and Cambodia have emphasized that the conflict is ultimately a bilateral issue, and reliance on external mediation alone cannot resolve the underlying territorial disputes. Without a clearly demarcated border, de-mining, and trust-building between military and political leadership, future ceasefires are likely to remain fragile.

This conflict demonstrates that while international intervention can temporarily halt violence, lasting peace requires addressing historical grievances, clarifying borders, and building genuine trust. Trump’s mediation highlighted the global attention the dispute commands, but it also exposed the limitations of externally brokered agreements when structural issues remain unresolved.
